Core Content Areas
The Edexcel IGCSE ICT course is a two-year linear qualification assessed across six main topic areas.
1. Digital Devices
This topic covers the types of digital devices, components of a computer system, and the different types of software and their uses.
2. Connectivity
Explores network types (LAN, WAN), network topologies, the internet, and wireless communication technologies.
3. Operating Online
Covers online services, e-commerce, cloud computing, and the risks and security issues associated with being online.
4. Applying ICT
Deals with the practical application of ICT in everyday life, including spreadsheets, databases, and presentations.
5. The Bigger Picture
Covers the impact of ICT on society, including the digital divide, ethical and legal issues, and the use of ICT in the workplace.
6. Creative and Technical Skills
Focuses on the practical skills required to create and manipulate a range of digital content, including web pages and multimedia.
Assessment Structure
The Edexcel IGCSE ICT qualification is assessed by two externally examined papers.
- Paper 1: Written Paper This is a 2-hour written exam worth 100 marks. It includes a mixture of short-answer, structured, and extended-response questions.
- Paper 2: Practical Paper This is a 3-hour practical exam worth 100 marks. It assesses a student’s ability to use a variety of software applications to complete a series of tasks.
- Both papers are externally assessed and each accounts for 50% of the total International GCSE grade.
