The course provides a foundational understanding of commerce, influenced by global changes and digital technology.

1. Commerce and Commercial Operations

Explores the difference between trade and commerce, interdependence of industries, business types (public/private), franchising, and the impact of e-commerce.

2. Globalisation of Trade

Addresses international trade benefits/challenges, Balance of Trade and Payments, free trade vs. protectionism, and the growth of multinational companies.

3. Aids to Trade and Finance

Covers essential supporting services like advertising, banking, and insurance. Examines sources of finance and documents, including profit, mark-up, and discount calculations.

4. Logistics in Commerce

Details the functions and importance of transport and warehousing in the distribution chain, including the use of containerisation.

5. Consumer Protection & Environment

Discusses the importance of consumer protection globally and the external factors (PESTEL — political, economic, social, technological, environmental, legal) influencing commercial activity.

Skill Development Focus

Learners develop a combination of commercial knowledge and higher-order analytical skills.
