Edexcel International GCSE in Physics (4PH0)

Edexcel International GCSE in Physics (4PH0)

In the fundamental study of the universe, physics serves as the essential language of nature. This course invites you to explore the laws governing the physical world by moving from the mechanics of everyday motion to the invisible forces of electromagnetism. You will gain a solid command of physical concepts and mathematical formulae, where you will learn to process experimental data and maintain accurate records of scientific investigations. Crucially, you will develop the technical ability to investigate energy transfers and the properties of waves while ensuring compliance with safety and scientific method. By mastering the analysis and interpretation of empirical evidence, you will be equipped to evaluate technological and environmental developments using logical reasoning and make sound decisions based on physical principles.

Core Content Areas

The Edexcel IGCSE Physics course is a comprehensive qualification that covers key physical concepts across six main topic areas.

1. Forces and Motion

Focuses on the laws of motion, momentum, forces, and the relationship between shape, movement, and stability.

2. Electricity

Explores mains electricity, current, potential difference, and the practical application of circuits in household devices.

3. Waves

Covers the properties of waves, the electromagnetic spectrum, and the behavior of light and sound.

4. Energy Resources and Transfer

Examines energy efficiency, work and power, and the generation of electricity from renewable and non-renewable sources.

5. Solids, Liquids, and Gases

Investigates density, pressure, and the ideal gas laws, connecting macroscopic properties to the particle model.

6. Magnetism and Radioactivity

Deals with magnetic fields, electromagnetic induction, atomic structure, and the uses and dangers of radioactivity.

Assessment Structure

The Edexcel IGCSE Physics qualification is assessed by two written examination papers.

  • Paper 1: This is a 2-hour written exam worth 120 marks. It assesses the core course content (approx. 61.1% of the total qualification).
  •
  • Paper 2: This is a 1-hour written exam worth 60 marks. It assesses the remaining content and requires a deeper understanding of investigations (approx. 38.9% of the total).
  •
  •
  • Both papers include multiple-choice, short-answer, and extended open-response questions, with calculations required throughout.
