Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry

Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry

This course explores the fundamental principles of matter and the reactions that shape our physical world. You will begin by examining the building blocks of materials, investigating atomic structure and the nature of chemical bonding to understand how elements interact. The curriculum expands to Physical Chemistry where you will analyze the energy changes in reactions and the factors that influence rates of reaction. You will also study Inorganic Chemistry by exploring the Periodic Table and the unique properties of different groups of elements. A key focus is placed on Organic Chemistry where you will investigate the chemistry of carbon compounds including fuels and polymers. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical experimental skills, you will be equipped to interpret chemical phenomena and apply scientific methods to solve real-world problems.

Core Content Areas

The Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry course is assessed across five main topic areas.

1. Principles of Chemistry

This topic includes states of matter, atomic structure, the periodic table, and chemical formulae.

2. Inorganic Chemistry

Covers Group 1, 7, and the transition metals, as well as the reactivity series of metals.

3. Physical Chemistry

Explores the properties of gases, energetics (endothermic/exothermic reactions), and rates of reaction.

4. Organic Chemistry

Deals with the classification of organic compounds, crude oil, fuels, and polymers.

5. Practical Chemistry

Covers the skills required for practical investigations, including observation and data recording.

Assessment Structure

The Edexcel IGCSE in Chemistry is a linear qualification, assessed by two written examination papers.

  • Paper 1: This paper is 2 hours long and is worth 110 marks. It assesses all course content.
  • Paper 2: This paper is 1 hour and 15 minutes long and is worth 50 marks. It assesses all course content and includes questions on practical chemistry.
  • Both papers are weighted to contribute to the final qualification.
