AS Level Content: Foundations of the Legal System and Core Law (Papers 1 and 2)
The AS Level provides a foundation in the English legal system, Criminal Law, Contract, and Tort.
English Legal System
Covers **sources of law** (legislation, precedent), **court structure**, civil/criminal procedure, legal personnel (judges, lawyers), and **Alternative Dispute Resolution** (ADR).
Criminal Law
**General principles** (actus reus, mens rea, strict liability), **non-fatal and fatal offences** (assault, murder, manslaughter), and core **defences** (self-defence, insanity).
Law of Contract
Covers **formation** (offer, acceptance, consideration), terms (express/implied), **vitiating factors** (misrepresentation, duress), and **discharge** (termination and breach).
Law of Tort
Includes **negligence** (duty, standard of care, causation), **occupier’s liability**, **vicarious liability**, and **defences** (contributory negligence).
A Level Content: Advanced Principles (Papers 3 and 4)
The A Level builds depth and complexity across all core legal areas.
Advanced Contract & Criminal Law
Deeper study of **remedies for breach of contract** (damages, specific performance), along with more extensive coverage of **fatal/non-fatal offences** and **property crimes**.
Advanced Law of Tort
Covers advanced topics in **negligence**, **nuisance**, and **defamation**.
Skill Development Focus
The course encourages the development of analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills applicable to legal situations.
Critical Analysis & Problem-Solving
Analysing legal principles/cases, evaluating arguments, and applying knowledge to **hypothetical scenarios** to provide reasoned solutions.
Evaluation & Communication
Assessing the operation and development of law within a **social and ethical context**, and presenting arguments **clearly and logically**.
Assessment Structure
Assessment consists of four externally-assessed papers, with a staged assessment route available.
- **Paper 1:** Legal System + Law of Contract (1 hr 30 mins) | 50% AS Mark.
- **Paper 2:** Legal System + Law of Tort (1 hr 30 mins) | 50% AS Mark.
- **Paper 3:** Law of Contract and Tort (1 hr 30 mins) | 25% A Level Mark (Essay questions).
- **Paper 4:** Criminal Law (1 hr 30 mins) | 25% A Level Mark (Essay questions and problem-solving tasks).
