Subject Content: Key Mathematical Themes

The course forms a strong foundation for future study by developing competency across both pure mathematical techniques and applied problem-solving.

1. Number

Covers integers, fractions, decimals, **percentages**, ratio, proportion, and **financial calculations** involving money.

2. Algebra and Functions

Focuses on representation, manipulation, solving **linear, simultaneous, and quadratic equations/inequalities**, and **graphs of functions**.

3. Geometry and Mensuration

Includes geometrical terms, **constructions**, symmetry, angles, **loci**, measures, **areas and volumes**, and **trigonometry**.

4. Coordinate Geometry, Transformations, and Vectors

Covers **Cartesian coordinates**, straight-line graphs, graphical representation of inequalities, **vectors** in two dimensions, and various **transformations**.

5. Probability and Statistics

Focuses on **basic probability** and handling data: organising, interpreting, and presenting categorical, numerical, and grouped data using diagrams.

Skill Development Focus

The course aims to enable candidates to translate unstructured problems into mathematical terms and communicate solutions clearly.

Reasoning and Analysis

Exploring mathematical ways of reasoning, recognising patterns, and making logical deductions from data.

Problem-Solving

Translating problems, selecting and applying strategies, and clearly communicating the final solution.

Numerical Accuracy and Interpretation

Performing calculations accurately (with/without a calculator) and organising and interpreting data effectively.

Assessment Structure

Assessment consists of two compulsory written papers, each weighted at 50% of the total mark.

Paper 1 (Non-calculator)

  • **Duration:** 2 hours
  • **Format:** Approximately 25 short-answer questions.
  • **Content Focus:** Tests all topics, emphasizing accuracy in basic mathematical techniques.
Paper 2 (Calculator)

  • **Duration:** 2 hours and 15 minutes
  • **Format:** Section A (approx. 6 compulsory structured questions, 52 marks) and Section B (answer 4 from 5 structured questions, 48 marks).
  • **Content Focus:** Tests application of combined mathematical skills to solve problems in context.

This structure is based on the Cambridge O Level Mathematics (Syllabus D) (4024).
