Core Content Areas
The Edexcel IGCSE Biology course is assessed across a number of key topic areas.
Topic 1: The Nature and Variety of Living Organisms
This includes classification, key characteristics of living organisms, and an introduction to cells.
Topic 2: Structure and Functions in Living Organisms
Covers cell structure, biological molecules, movement across cell membranes, and nutrition.
Topic 3: Reproduction and Inheritance
Explores reproduction in plants and animals, the process of inheritance, and variation and natural selection.
Topic 4: Ecology and the Environment
Deals with organisms and their environment, food chains, nutrient cycles, and human impact on ecosystems.
Topic 5: Use of Biological Resources
Covers topics like food production, genetic modification, and the use of microorganisms in industry.
Assessment Structure
The Edexcel IGCSE in Biology is a linear qualification, assessed by two written examination papers.
- Paper 1 (4BI1/01): This paper is 2 hours long and is worth 110 marks. It assesses all course content.
- Paper 2 (4BI1/02): This paper is 1 hour and 15 minutes long and is worth 50 marks. It assesses all course content and includes questions on practical biology.
- Both papers are weighted to contribute to the final qualification.
