Sri Lanka G.C.E. Advance Level (A/L) Biology

Sri Lanka G.C.E. Advance Level (A/L) Biology

In the intricate study of life’s continuity, biology serves as the essential framework for understanding living systems. This course invites you to explore the diversity of existence by moving from the molecular basis of inheritance to the complex interactions of global ecosystems. You will gain a solid command of biological concepts and terminology, where you will learn to process experimental data and maintain accurate records of microscopic and macroscopic observations. Crucially, you will develop the technical ability to investigate physiological processes and genetic mechanisms while ensuring compliance with scientific methods and laboratory ethics. By mastering the analysis and interpretation of biological phenomena, you will be equipped to evaluate health and environmental issues using critical reasoning and make informed decisions based on scientific evidence.

Core Content Areas

The Sri Lankan GCE A/L Biology syllabus is a vast and detailed course designed to provide a deep understanding of biological principles across six main units.

1. Molecules of Life and Cell Biology

Focuses on the chemical basis of life, cell structure, function, and the cell cycle (mitosis and meiosis).

2. Genetics and Molecular Biology

Explores patterns of inheritance, DNA replication, protein synthesis, and modern applications of recombinant DNA technology.

3. Evolution and Diversity

Covers the theories of evolution and a comprehensive survey of the biological kingdoms from Monera to Animalia.

4. Plant Form and Function

Investigates plant tissues, nutrition, transport systems, reproduction, and responses to environmental stimuli.

5. Animal Form and Function

Deals with human physiology including digestion, respiration, circulation, immunity, homeostasis, and nervous coordination.

6. Ecology and Applied Biology

Examines ecosystems, global environmental issues, microbiology, and the economic importance of microorganisms.

Assessment Structure

The GCE A/L Biology qualification is assessed by the Department of Examinations via two written papers.

  • Paper I (Multiple Choice): A 2-hour exam consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions covering the entire syllabus. This paper tests both knowledge and analytical skills.
  •
  • Paper II (Structured & Essay): A 3-hour exam. Part A contains 4 compulsory structured essay questions. Part B requires students to answer 4 out of 6 essay questions.
  •
  • Practical Component: There is no separate laboratory exam. Instead, practical skills and knowledge of core experiments are assessed directly within the written papers.
